Exercise during pregnancy has multiple health benefits, both for you and your baby!
Being active during your pregnancy has been shown to:
- Lower risk of gestational diabetes
- Eases common pregnancy discomforts (decrease frequency of back and pelvic pain)
- Lower risk of urinary incontinence
- Helps prepare for labour and postpartum recover
- Improved development for baby
- Improved mental health
- Improves sleep quality
A 2022 study found women doing heavy resistance training had good pelvic floor outcome, lower perinatal depression scores and less c-section rates.
Make it safe!
Modifications may need to be made to ensure you stay physically comfortable and reduce injury risk. If you have any medical conditions or pregnancy complications contact your midwife or GP to discuss training during your pregnancy. Not only is it safe to continue with your pre-pregnancy exercise of choice, it’s also beneficial to move your body in new ways, of course discussing with medical professionals first.
